Por vs para in Spanish: how to actually choose

Reasons, routes, gifts and deadlines — pick por or para without freezing mid-sentence.

GRAMMAR PACK · 5 LESSONS · B1

Para points forward — destination (salgo para Madrid mañana), purpose (estudio para ser médica), recipient (este regalo es para mi madre), deadline (lo necesito para el viernes). Por looks behind and around — cause (llegamos tarde por el tráfico), duration (estudié por dos horas), motion through (caminamos por el parque), and exchange (pagué veinte euros por el libro). The pair that trips everyone: trabajo para una empresa grande — your employer — versus trabajo por mi familia — for their sake.

Below: the sentences where por and para collide most, what locals say instead, the errors that mark a textbook learner — and how &Be makes the choice automatic by talking it out, not by fill-in-the-blank quizzes.

What locals actually say

Textbooks teach one word. Locals use several — pick your region's and stay consistent.

Watch out

Mistakes that mark you as a textbook speaker

  1. Using para where por is needed for cause: 'Lo hago para ti' when you mean 'because of you'.'Lo hago por ti' = for your sake/because of you.
  2. Saying 'trabajo por Google' for employer.employer takes para — 'trabajo para Google'.
  3. Using para for duration: 'estudié para dos horas'.duration takes por — 'estudié por dos horas'.

Carla

Your grammar teacher for this pack

No blanks to fill — in the Por Placer lessons, Carla keeps you talking through the exact spots where por and para collide: trips, work, shopping. She runs live minimal pairs — who you work for (para) versus why you work (por mi familia) — and corrects only the one that's wrong, telling you why. Then she has you slot the fixed chunks into your own sentences, out loud: por ejemplo, por supuesto, por lo menos, para siempre — until the right one arrives before you can overthink it.

Blank mid-sentence and nothing bad happens — she waits. That's the practice, without unnecessary judgement.

Quick answers

Questions people ask

Is it 'gracias por' or 'gracias para'?

Gracias por tu ayuda — always por. Thanks responds to a cause, and cause is por's home turf: te doy las gracias por el regalo.

How do you say 'by Friday' in Spanish — por or para?

Deadlines take para: lo necesito para el viernes, tengo que terminarlo para el lunes. Saying por el viernes is the classic slip.

Is it 'trabajo por' or 'trabajo para' a company?

Employer takes para: trabajo para una empresa grande. Trabajo por mi familia means you work for their sake — motivation, not employer. Both are correct; they just answer different questions.

What's the difference between 'salgo por Madrid' and 'salgo para Madrid'?

Salgo para Madrid = Madrid is your destination. Por Madrid means through or around Madrid — the route, not the goal, like viajamos por toda España.

Which Spanish expressions are fixed with por or para?

Memorize these as chunks rather than reasoning them out: por ejemplo, por supuesto, por lo menos, para siempre. And for opinions: para mí, es demasiado caro — 'in my opinion'.
