The move that separates panelists from spectators is the opener: yo creo que… sounds weak on a stage, so plant a thesis instead — mi punto de partida es que el problema está mal planteado desde el inicio, or si me permiten, voy a empezar con una idea que quizás resulte incómoda. When you disagree, nuance beats confrontation: coincido en lo esencial, aunque llego ahí por un camino distinto, or the firmer con todo respeto, creo que esa conclusión no se sostiene con los datos disponibles. And don't translate great question as gran pregunta — in Latin America the natural move is gracias por la pregunta or muy pertinente su pregunta, all of it in formal usted register.

Thank the moderator first — muchas gracias por la invitación y por la presentación tan generosa — then plant a clear thesis: mi punto de partida es que… or si me permiten, voy a empezar con una idea que quizás resulte incómoda. Promise brevity and mean it: voy a ser breve porque sé que queremos dejar espacio al diálogo.
Name them before you answer them, then acknowledge and add: lo que dice María me parece fundamental, y quisiera matizarlo un poco. To check you've understood: si entendí bien, lo que estás diciendo es que el modelo actual ya no funciona. To circle back: me gustaría retomar algo que mencionaste hace un momento.
Split the difference precisely: estoy de acuerdo en el diagnóstico, pero no en la solución. For a firmer challenge: con todo respeto, creo que esa conclusión no se sostiene con los datos disponibles, or permítame discrepar sin por eso restarle mérito a su argumento. Saying only estoy de acuerdo contigo when you half-disagree buries your point.
Buy time and precision by reframing: si me permite, voy a reformular un poco la pregunta para poder responderla mejor. Honesty lands well on stage: le voy a responder con honestidad, aunque no tengo una respuesta completa. If it's huge: esa pregunta daría para otro panel entero, pero intentaré ser concreto.
Not gran pregunta — that's a literal translation that sounds off in Latin America. Say gracias por la pregunta or muy pertinente su pregunta, and if you're pressed for time, voy al grano signals you'll get straight to the point.
