How to talk to an insurance agent in Spanish

Compare policies, question the fine print, and report a claim — firmly, politely, out loud.

CONVERSATION PACK · 6 LESSONS · B2

Start with the vocabulary traps, because they're brutal here: an insurance policy is la póliza, never política, and filing a claim is presentar un reclamo or reportar un siniestroreclamar on its own just means to complain. Keep the register on usted from start to finish, and make 'get it in writing' your reflex: quisiera que me lo dejara por escrito. Know your region's word for deductible too — el deducible in Mexico, la franquicia in Argentina and Spain.

Below: the phrases for comparing quotes, reading exclusions, filing and disputing claims, what locals actually say — and a way to rehearse the whole appointment out loud before your policy depends on it.

The phrases that carry the conversation

comparing policy options

  • ¿Existe algún periodo de carencia antes de que entren en vigor ciertas coberturas? Is there any waiting period before certain coverages take effect?

understanding coverage and exclusions

  • Quisiera leer con calma la letra pequeña antes de firmar; la cláusula de exclusiones me genera dudas.I'd like to read the fine print carefully before signing; the exclusions clause raises some doubts.

Watch out

Mistakes that mark you as a textbook speaker

  1. Traducir 'policy' como 'política' cuando se refiere a un seguro.usa 'póliza'; 'política' es policy en sentido político/empresarial.
  2. Decir 'reclamar' cuando el hablante quiere decir 'filing a claim'.'presentar un reclamo' o 'reportar un siniestro'; 'reclamar' solo es protestar.
  3. Usar 'actualmente' por 'actually'.'actualmente' = currently; para 'actually' di 'en realidad' o 'de hecho'.

In the Insurance Agent pack, the final lesson is a scheduled appointment — and Isabella plays the agent: friendly, sales-confident, strictly usted, but she knows the fine print exists to protect the company, and she pulls up a tablet with diagrams of coverage tiers. Policy brochures fanned across the desk. You're comparing two policies, you have a minor accident from last week to report — police report, mechanic's estimate, photos — and you need to push for clarity on exclusions before you sign anything. Out loud. And she talks back.

  • Isabella quotes a price that's notably higher than a competitor — student must push back politely using 'estoy comparando tres cotizaciones'
  • She explains the deductible structure in a confusing way — student must ask for it 'por escrito' and reference specific clauses
  • When student reports the incident, she hints the case might fall under an exclusion — student must dispute calmly using 'según mi lectura de la póliza'

Blank mid-sentence and nothing bad happens — she waits. That's the practice, without unnecessary judgement.

Quick answers

Questions people ask

How do you say 'insurance policy' in Spanish?

La póliza. The false friend la política means policy only in the political or corporate sense — use it with an insurance agent and you've told them you're a beginner.

How do I file an insurance claim in Spanish?

Open with quisiera reportar un siniestro, then narrate en orden cronológico so nothing gets lost. Come armed: ya cuento con el parte policial, el presupuesto del taller y las fotos tomadas en el lugar.

What is the deductible called in Spanish?

El deducible in Mexico and much of Latin America; la franquicia in Argentina and Spain. The question worth asking before you sign: ¿qué tan flexible es el deducible y cómo impacta en la prima mensual?

How do I dispute a rejected insurance claim in Spanish?

Argue from the document, calmly: según mi lectura de la póliza, esa exclusión no aplicaría en mi caso particular. Demand the reasoning in writing — el sustento técnico de la decisión — and keep la defensoría del asegurado (the policyholder's ombudsman) as your polite escalation card.

How do I negotiate my insurance renewal in Spanish?

Lead with loyalty: llevo varios años con ustedes, pero la renovación de este año viene con un aumento que no logro justificar. Mention leverage — he recibido una oferta bastante competitiva de otra aseguradora — and if you do switch, protect yourself: necesito que el cambio de póliza no me deje descubierto ni un solo día.
