How to give professional advice in Spanish like a consultant

Diagnose the real problem, present findings, and defend them under pushback — out loud, in Spanish.

CONVERSATION PACK · 6 LESSONS · C1

Consulting Spanish is usted, always, unless the client explicitly invites otherwise — and it lives on the conditional of hypothesis: mi hipótesis preliminar, que todavía tenemos que validar, then si esto fuera cierto, esperaríamos ver una correlación. Know the vocabulary traps that expose a translator: a finding is un hallazgo (never "encontramiento"), and to support a decision is respaldarsoportar means to tolerate it. When the message is hard, the register carries it: lo que no voy a hacer es suavizar los números para que el reporte sea más digerible.

Below: the phrases that run a discovery interview, a findings readout and a scoped proposal, the calques that give you away — and a way to deliver hard conclusions to a defensive CEO, out loud, before you do it for real.

Say this

The phrases that carry the conversation

Before proposing solutions, I'd like to understand how you see the problem from the inside.
Tell me about a typical day for the team: where does time go that you wish wasn't lost?
If you could change one single thing tomorrow morning, what would it be?
I'm less interested in what the org chart says and more in how decisions actually get made in practice.

Presentar hallazgos

I'm sharing three main findings with you and the evidence that supports each one.
The first is that gross margin fell seven points in two years, concentrated in two products.
I warn you that some of these conclusions will make specific people on the team uncomfortable.
My reading is that the problem isn't talent; it's misaligned incentives.

Manejar objeciones

I understand the objection; let me show you why the data points in a different direction.
It's a valid critique, and in fact we addressed it in the methodology.
If the assumption were different, the conclusion would change; that's why we documented it in such detail.
I'm not asking you to agree today; I'm asking you to let me finish the reasoning.

Regional Spanish

What locals actually say

Textbooks teach one word. Locals use several — pick your region's and stay consistent.

Watch out

Mistakes that mark you as a textbook speaker

Isabella

Your conversation teacher for this pack

In the Consult-ant pack, the final lesson is a mid-engagement readout in an executive conference room — your deck is on the screen, but Isabella, the founder-CEO who hired you, mostly looks at you: driven, defensive when the conclusions touch her own decisions, and respectful only of someone who pushes back with data. At some point she shoves the deck aside and says dígame en una frase qué le diga al directorio. You hold the uncomfortable diagnosis, defend the methodology, and scope phase two. Out loud. In formal usted.

  • Isabella rejects the uncomfortable diagnosis and asks the student to soften it for the board; the student must hold the finding while reformulating the language
  • She challenges the data sample as unrepresentative; the student must defend methodology and concede limits without surrendering the conclusion
  • She proposes shrinking phase two to half the budget; the student must articulate what concretely drops from scope rather than promising the same outcome for less

Blank mid-sentence and nothing bad happens — she waits. That's the practice, without unnecessary judgement.

Quick answers

Questions people ask

How do you say 'findings' and 'deliverables' in Spanish?

A finding is un hallazgo — the standard report noun; "encontramiento" doesn't exist. Entregable is correct for deliverable, but anchor it to something concrete: entregable de fase dos, entregable final.

How do you say 'support a decision' in Spanish?

Not with soportar — that means to tolerate or endure something. Use respaldar, apoyar or sustentar. Saying soportar esta decisión tells the room you can barely stand it.

How do you present a hypothesis to a client in Spanish?

Label it as unvalidated, then state the test: mi hipótesis preliminar, que todavía tenemos que validar, es que el cuello de botella está en la aprobaciónsi esto fuera cierto, esperaríamos ver una correlación entre tiempo de ciclo y tamaño del pedido. And keep your distance from it: no quiero enamorarme de una hipótesis antes de ver los números.

How do you handle client pushback in Spanish?

Acknowledge, then redirect to the evidence: entiendo la objeción; déjenme mostrarles por qué los datos apuntan en otra dirección. If the critique is fair, say so — es una crítica válida, y de hecho la contemplamos en la metodología — and buy room to finish: no les estoy pidiendo que estén de acuerdo hoy; les pido que me permitan terminar el razonamiento.

Should I use tú or usted with a client in Spanish?

Usted, always, unless the client explicitly invites you to switch. A human touch is welcome, but without colloquialisms — the consulting register stays executive even when the relationship warms up.
