How to talk to a mechanic in Spanish

Describe the noise, question the estimate, and approve the repair — in formal Spanish, out loud.

CONVERSATION PACK · 6 LESSONS · B2

Use usted — mechanics across Latin America expect the formal register, especially once money is on the table. Describe the symptom concretely: when it started, what sets it off, and what it sounds like, as in Hace un ruido raro cuando freno, como un chirrido metálico. Ask for a written estimate broken down: ¿me puede desglosar piezas y mano de obra? And call a quote a presupuesto or cotización, never cita — that's your appointment time, not the price.

Below: the phrases that carry the visit, the mistakes that give you away, and a way to rehearse the whole shop visit out loud before you're standing in the bay.

The phrases that carry the conversation

It makes a weird noise when I brake, like a metallic squeal.
The engine jerks when I accelerate, especially on hills.
  • Noté un olor a quemado después de manejar media hora.I noticed a burning smell after driving half an hour.

Fifteen hundred seems high; can you break down parts and labor for me?
  • Apruebo la reparación siempre que el precio no se dispare al final.I approve the repair as long as the price doesn't skyrocket at the end.
  • Preferiría que me llamara antes de hacer cualquier trabajo adicional.I'd prefer you call me before doing any additional work.
Would there be any way to lower the cost a bit without sacrificing quality?

Are the parts original or aftermarket brand?
What warranty do you give me on the work, in months and kilometers?
Give it to me in writing what the warranty covers, please.
If it fails again within a month, would the repair be on you?

Regional Spanish

What locals actually say

Textbooks teach one word. Locals use several — pick your region's and stay consistent.

Watch out

Mistakes that mark you as a textbook speaker

Your conversation teacher for this pack

In the Car Mechanic pack, the final lesson puts you in the bay of a neighborhood garage with your car already up on the lift — and Isabella plays the head mechanic: honest, no-nonsense, strictly usted, wiping the grease off her hands before she reaches for the clipboard. There's a recurring noise you have to describe, an estimate that comes in higher than you expected, and a repair to approve or decline. Out loud. And she talks back:

  • Isabella's estimate comes in 30% higher than expected — student must request a breakdown and politely push back using 'me parece alto, ¿me puede desglosar?'
  • She says the problem is 'urgent enough' but not critical — student must use a conditional hypothetical ('¿qué pasaría si sigo manejando así una semana más?') to decide timing
  • She offers used parts to save money — student must weigh quality vs. cost and request original parts with written warranty

Blank mid-sentence and nothing bad happens — she waits. That's the practice, without unnecessary judgement.

Quick answers

Questions people ask

Should I use tú or usted with a mechanic in Spanish?

Usted. A mechanic is a first-time, professional interaction, so the formal register is expected — especially around estimates and money. Keep it warm but formal: fíjese, le explico el problema.

How do I describe a car problem in Spanish?

Be concrete about the symptom and when it happens. Hace un ruido raro cuando freno (it makes a weird noise when I brake), el motor tironea al acelerar (the engine jerks when I accelerate), or el volante vibra cuando paso de los ochenta (the wheel vibrates over eighty).

How do you say "estimate" or "quote" for a car repair in Spanish?

It's presupuesto or cotización — not cita, which is your appointment time. Ask for the breakdown: ¿me puede desglosar piezas y mano de obra? (can you break down parts and labor for me?).

How do I ask about the warranty on a car repair in Spanish?

Ask in months and kilometers, and get it in writing: ¿Qué garantía me dan sobre el trabajo? and Deme por escrito lo que cubre la garantía, por favor. If it fails again soon: Si falla de nuevo en un mes, ¿el arreglo correría por su cuenta?

Is it carro, auto, or coche in Spanish?

All three mean car — the choice is regional. Mexico and Colombia say el carro, Argentina and Chile say el auto, and Spain says el coche. Pick your region's word and stay consistent — mixing them mid-conversation is a giveaway.
