How to structure a paragraph in Spanish (ahora bien, de ahí que, en suma)

Chain claim, example, pivot and close so a whole spoken paragraph lands as one thought.

GRAMMAR PACK · 6 LESSONS · C2

A cultured Spanish paragraph is built from bricks, each with its own connector. Open with the claim — partiremos de una premisa sencilla — then deepen it without leaving it: dicho de otro modo, conviene precisar. Bring the example in subordinate to the claim (pongamos por caso, valga como ilustración), pivot with ahora bien or no obstante lo anterior, derive the consequence — de ahí que + subjunctive, por consiguiente — and close by synthesizing, never adding: en suma, en definitiva. One connector per junction is the discipline. &Be trains this the way it's actually used — building the paragraph out loud in conversation, not on a worksheet, no drills, no fill-in-the-blanks.

Below: the connectors for each brick — opening, elaboration, example, pivot, consequence, close — and a way to rehearse assembling them into one flowing spoken paragraph.

Carla

Your grammar teacher for this pack

In the Brick Layer lessons, Carla has you build brick by brick, out loud: a five-sentence paragraph where each sentence does exactly one job — topic, elaboration, example, pivot, close. Then the connector-swap audit: she takes your paragraph and makes you replace every connector with a higher-register alternative, judging how the tone shifts. And when it flows too smoothly, she forces a turn mid-paragraph — ahora bien, no obstante — and you have to resolve it back to your topic without dropping the thread. Spoken, in real time.

Blank mid-sentence and nothing bad happens — she waits. That's the practice, without unnecessary judgement.

Quick answers

Questions people ask

What does 'ahora bien' mean in Spanish?

It's the argumentative pivot — roughly 'that said' or 'now then': ahora bien, este panorama no está exento de contradicciones de fondo. It signals a turn, and it must connect back to the topic, not open a new one.

Does 'de ahí que' take the subjunctive?

Yes: de ahí que la política educativa requiera una revisión integral. If you want the indicative, switch connector — por consiguiente, no cabe esperar cambios sustanciales.

How do you introduce an example formally in Spanish?

Beyond por ejemplo: pongamos por caso, valga como ilustración, piénsese en la manera en que Borges tradujo a Whitman, or un caso paradigmático es… The example stays subordinate to the claim it serves.

What's the difference between 'en suma' and 'en definitiva'?

Both close, with different weight. En suma condenses what was said: en suma, el panorama exige prudencia antes que entusiasmo desmedido. En definitiva delivers the verdict: en definitiva, lo que está en juego es el propio sentido del oficio. Neither should introduce new content.

How do you open an essay or report in Spanish?

Announce the scope or the thesis in the first sentence: el presente informe se centra en…, conviene empezar señalando que…, or set the premise directly — partiremos de una premisa sencilla: la confianza institucional depende menos de la eficacia y más de la percepción.
