How to talk about skincare and makeup in Spanish

Describe your routine, compare products, and give a friend honest beauty advice — out loud.

CONVERSATION PACK · 6 LESSONS · B2

Beauty talk between friends runs on casual and three sensory words: textura, acabado, cobertura. Walk through a routine in sequence — mi rutina de mañana empieza con un limpiador suave, después del tónico aplico un sérum con vitamina C, termino siempre con protector solar — and recommend with si + present, conditional: si tu piel es sensible, yo iría por algo sin fragancia. Doubt takes the subjunctive: dudo que ese sérum funcione, never dudo que funciona. And watch the false friend — actualmente means currently; for "actually" say en realidad or la verdad.

Below: the phrases lesson by lesson, how it actually sounds from Mexico City to Buenos Aires, the slips that give you away — and a way to rehearse giving honest beauty advice out loud before a friend asks for real.

Regional Spanish

What locals actually say

Textbooks teach one word. Locals use several — pick your region's and stay consistent.

Watch out

Mistakes that mark you as a textbook speaker

  1. Saying 'maquillaje' as a verb.use 'maquillarse' (reflexive verb), as in 'me maquillo'; 'maquillaje' is only the noun.
  2. Using 'actualmente' to mean 'actually'.'actualmente' means 'currently'; to say 'actually' use 'en realidad' or 'la verdad'.
  3. Forgetting the subjunctive after 'dudo que' or 'no creo que'.'dudo que ese sérum funcione' (not 'dudo que funciona').

Isabella

Your conversation teacher for this pack

In the Beauty Influencer pack, the final lesson is a live conversation — and Isabella plays a close friend who works as a hairdresser and trusts your beauty advice: curious, budget-conscious, easily swayed by TikTok trends but smart enough to ask you first. You're on her living-room couch on a Sunday afternoon, her beauty bag spilled across the coffee table, her cousin's wedding three weeks away. She has oily-combination skin, two products she's torn between, and one viral trend she wants your honest take on — and she keeps pulling up product photos on her phone mid-sentence. Out loud. And she talks back:

  • Isabella reveals she's already bought one of the products and is afraid she wasted money — student has to give an honest take without crushing her
  • She pulls up an influencer video swearing by a $80 cream and asks if it's really worth it — student must call out marketing hype politely
  • Her skin reacted badly to retinol last month and she's nervous about active ingredients — student has to adjust the recommendation around that

Blank mid-sentence and nothing bad happens — she waits. That's the practice, without unnecessary judgement.

Quick answers

Questions people ask

How do I describe my skincare routine in Spanish?

Walk it in order: mi rutina de mañana empieza con un limpiador suave, después del tónico aplico un sérum con vitamina C, de noche uso retinol tres veces por semana — and close with termino siempre con protector solar, sin falta.

How do you say combination skin, oily skin, and sensitive skin in Spanish?

Piel mixta, piel grasa, piel sensible. In real conversation you'd say tengo piel mixta y se me brilla la zona T — my T-zone gets shiny — which instantly tells a friend what to recommend.

How do I recommend a beauty product in Spanish?

Use si + present, conditional: si tu piel es sensible, yo iría por algo sin fragancia; para piel grasa, recomendaría una fórmula en gel. To slow a friend down before a splurge: te convendría probar primero una muestra antes de comprarlo.

How do you say a product is overhyped or pure marketing in Spanish?

Eso es puro marketing, el ingrediente activo está en mínima cantidad — that's pure marketing, the active is barely in there. Add the healthy-skeptic line: me da mucha desconfianza que no muestren estudios reales. In the Caribbean you'll hear eso es puro cuento.

Does 'actualmente' mean 'actually' in Spanish?

No — actualmente means currently. For "actually", say en realidad or la verdad, as in la verdad, pagué un dineral y no noté absolutamente nada — honestly, I paid a fortune and noticed nothing.
